OLD TUNAVILLIANS EXPERIMENT WITH A MORE EXPANSIVE STYLE AND WITH SOME SUCCESS !

O.T.R.F.C. 14 - Bigtown Scottish 3

After their uninspired performance last week against Bigtown Irish, Old Tunavillians promised a change of style for this week's game and to a certain extent they delivered. Ever keen to look for quick ball to feed their free flowing backs, there were times in this game when they ran the opposition defence ragged. Integral to this game plan was the ability of scrum-half Dodd to link effectively between backs and forwards and fortunately he played a stormer, always in the thick of the action and using his upper body strength to take on single-handedly the attentions of the opposing back row.

The first try was a good case in point. A line-out on half-way was won cleanly by the Rev. Mullins, jumping at 4 and rising like a spawning salmon above the head of his marker. Dodd then attacked the opposition through the middle, supported by both Walsh and Lucas. From the ensuing ruck quick ball was recycled and passed along the line where once again the midfield pairing of Mitchell and Horsley executed a perfect miss move to set up the free-flowing Aslett. There was no stopping him from five yards out and he duly crashed over, taking two defenders along for good measure. It was a glorious try, one that was greeted with rapturous applause. Donaldson added the two extra points.

Turning round at half-time 7 points ahead, Tunaville kept with their promise to play attractive rugby and their reward came in the 67th minute. A sweeping move, where ball was recycled seven times in a row, resulted in the fast improving Walsh crashing over between the posts after a superb dummy from McKinney.

Tunavillians were unlucky not to add to their tally, but could not quite hold on to the final pass, with both Slaughter and Walker being notable culprits.

A needless penalty coming from ill discipline yet again from Aslett, when he went to the defence of his team-mate Airey, who he claimed had been raked on his head, (in his defence an obvious stud mark was visible after the game) allowed Scottish to get on the scoreboard. Overall though it had been a performance from which Tunaville will take a great deal of heart for the forthcoming visit to Bigtown Welsh in a fortnight's time.

NB : The captain of Old Tunavillians has asked that the Gazette remind players that in future those offering to share lifts to take others to away games should have a car that can accomodate more than two people. As a consequence two door sports cars are not very helpful - Mr. Aslett please take note.
